As we all know, there has been a great deal being discussed about how to help the most disadvantaged 3 and 4 year olds. The aim is to boost their performance and help ‘narrow the gap’.

TTS Group Ltd, supplier of high quality educational resources to schools and Early Years settings, have put together a new catalogue full of resources and practical support for developing communication, language and literacy skills in Early Years. TTS have worked with 3 early years practitioners from Busy Bees/Busy Bears in County Durham, who have provided lots of practical advice throughout the booklet.

tts_-_terrific_tent_den_3.jpgEnvironments are key to ensure children have inspiration for magical adventures during play. Places to read, talk and listen are fundamental in helping the child to progress in literacy. Natural hubs, dens and huts appeal to children and provide them with a defined space in which they can retreat and hide. The Terrific Tent Den, pictured left (EY06327), £799.95 provides a delightful reading area or a cosy place to hide away and chat and play with friends. Children will love spending time in the inviting, versatile space and will have fun creating a fantastic role play camping scene.

Manipulative resources are great for fine motor skills but also for fostering a sense of challenge, creativity, independence and exploration. Working with Alice Sharp, TTS have developed Pockets, pictured right (EY06254). This set of lovtts_-_explorer_pockets_3.jpgely bags, each with different fastenings ranging from ties to zips and made from a different fabric or texture. Great for fine motor skills, these pockets also add a sense of exploration, discovering what is inside. Why not fill the fabric bags with themed resources or items that meet special interests. Imagine finding dinosaurs in the green furry bag or treasure in the metallic bag. The set includes 8 bags in various fabrics and are priced at £39.95.

tts_-_giant_explorer_board_2.jpgPresent children with a variety of methods of grasping and selecting, to help develop fine motor skills. Following on from the delightful mini Explorer Board, TTS have developed a giant version. The Giant Explorer Board, pictured left has lots of different shapes for children to explore and is large enough to allow several children to work together. Each shape has a peg for young children to grasp and the board can be customised to any theme by simply inserting your own designs. Costing £64.95, the Giant Explorer Board will hold 2 A3 sheets. A great way to encourage language, fine motor skills and so much more.
