In this video case study, staff and pupils at Montem Academy share how Kapow Primary has transformed the teaching of Art & Design across the school.

The headteacher explains how the Art & Design scheme has increased teacher confidence through clear progression, comprehensive resources, demonstration videos and subject-specific vocabulary. Teachers now feel more confident modelling techniques, while pupils benefit from engaging, progressive lessons that develop both practical skills and artistic knowledge.

The school has seen improvements in pupil engagement and confidence and they now take pride in their work. Children are more willing to take creative risks, can evaluate and critique their own artwork, and have developed a stronger understanding of artists and artistic concepts, both in and beyond the classroom.

“What’s most helpful about the demo videos is that they teach you step by step how to do something.”

Kapow has addressed many of the concerns that the teachers have had in terms of their fear of teaching and their lack of knowledge of teaching art. When we did some CPD with them, they understood that actually this was something that everyone could deliver. But what really encouraged the staff to come on board was the outcomes. Seeing what children were producing when the scheme was followed. Seeing the children’s real potential meant that every teacher knew that this was something they needed to embrace.
