On 30 October 2017, BESA participated in a summit organised by Justine Greening, Secretary of State for Education to explore the benefits of and barriers to flexible working in schools. The Summit brought together teaching unions, school leaders and business professionals and asked for each organisation to offer at least one pledge of action.
We at BESA pledged to:
- update our articles of association to incorporate flexible working practices in the governance of both our trustee arrangements and our own staff working practices;
 - issue flexible working best-practice guidance to the 400 companies we work with to encourage companies to provide support for schools that helps facilitate flexible working.

A range of BESA members, including TES and Microsoft, also pledged to increase flexible working, as did the EDUCATE project, of which BESA is a delivery partner.
