Course description
- Would you like your students to remember more of what they learn, not just until the test, but months and even years later?
- Would you like practical, low-preparation strategies that improve memory without adding to your workload?
- And would you like your students to use what they know more confidently when tackling new problems, questions and ideas?
This engaging and highly practical inset training explores the research behind how memory works and, more importantly, what teachers can do to make learning last. Drawing on the work of leading educational researchers including Daniel Willingham, Dylan Wiliam and Barak Rosenshine, the course combines cognitive science with classroom practice. Every strategy is designed to be straightforward to implement, adaptable across subjects and capable of becoming part of everyday teaching.
Course outline:
- Explore what research tells us about how students learn, remember and forget.
- Practical retrieval strategies that go beyond simply giving a quiz.
- Helping students think deeply through elaboration and meaningful tasks.
- Scaffolding that supports thinking without creating dependency.
- Low-preparation classroom routines that help knowledge stick.
- Practical ways to help students transfer and apply what they know in unfamiliar contexts.
Outcome:
By the end of this inset, staff will have a clear understanding of how memory works and a toolkit of practical, evidence-informed strategies that can be used across all subjects. They will leave with approaches that help students retain knowledge more effectively, think more deeply about what they are learning and apply that knowledge with greater confidence.
