Job Specification: Policy Analyst – BESA

Reporting lines: Reports to Head of Membership and Marketing

Hours: Monday – Friday (9am – 5pm)

Location: Canary Wharf, London (with some travel in the UK)

About the role:

Working closely with the Directors of BESA and the marketing team, this role requires someone with an active interest in education and the workings of Parliament and the Devolved Administrations, to monitor, digest and communicate policy developments to the team, our members and stakeholders.

Detailed duties and responsibilities:

  • Daily monitoring of Parliament, Government Departments and Devolved Administrations
  • In-depth analysis of political developments and policy dossiers in the UK to provide advice for BESA and our members and to shape future lobbying work;
  • Researching and drafting briefing papers for Directors, members and the BESA team
  • Social media work, including tweeting and blogging
  • Writing articles and speeches
  • Supporting the wider marketing and comms activities with messaging and insight

The candidates should fulfil the following criteria:

  • 2-3 years of relevant experience/or a demonstrable interest in public affairs and policy
  • A relevant degree or equivalent in political sciences, law, education, or communications (we may also consider CVs from current students)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy across all areas of work
  • A working understanding of Parliamentary structures, committees and processes
  • Good news sense and awareness of wider political context
  • A willingness to learn

Working relationships:

This role requires working with other departments within the association, such as events, marketing and finance.

Reporting lines:

Reporting to the Head of Membership and Marketing, although will liaise closely with the Directors.

The package:

Competitive salary – negotiable depending on experience (£24,000 or higher depending on experience)

Pension scheme.

25 days holiday plus bank holidays.

The role has a three-month probationary period.

Estimated start date: July, although notice periods are fully taken into account.
